If your skills or qualifications are demanded in Australia, you may eligible to apply for a skilled visa. It’s a point-based system, with different type of visa classes. The current pass-mark is 65 points for Skilled visa. You need to submit Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect online first, then you can lodge your visa application after being invited.
Skilled Independent Visa
This subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. It is for Points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government.
Eligibility
You must:
- have a relevant occupation
- have a suitable skill assessment for the occupation
- meet the points test pass mark of 65 points
- be invited to apply
- be under 45 years of age at time of invitation
- meet the English requirement
- meet the health and character requirement
Nominated Skilled Visa
This subclass 190 Nominated Skilled visa allows skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.
Eligibility
You must:
- have a relevant occupation
- have a suitable skill assessment for the occupation
- meet the points test pass mark of 65 points
- be nominated by a state or territory government agency
- be invited to apply
- be under 45 years of age at time of invitation
- meet the English requirement
- meet the health and character requirement
Skilled Regional Visa (Provisional)
This subclass 491 visa allows skilled workers to live and work in regional or low-population growth metropolitan areas of Australia for up to four years. You need to be nominated by a government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area.
This visa will lead to the permanent Skilled Regional visa (subclass 191).
Eligibility
You must:
- have a relevant occupation
- have a suitable skill assessment for the occupation
- meet the points test pass mark of 65 points
- be nominated by a state or territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative (Invited pathway)
- be invited to apply (Invited Pathway)
- be under 45 years of age at time of invitation
- meet the English requirement
- meet the health and character requirement
Please note that you need to meet both Home Affairs criteria and state government’s requirement for the nominated skilled visa subclass 190 and 491 visa. State government’s requirements, selecting criteria, and the procedures vary.
